Dr. Kathryn Neel

Attended NC State and B.S. OK State
DVM - Auburn University

Joined Vinton Veterinary Hospital in 1983 after graduating from Auburn Univ.

Originally from Waynesboro, VA
Bachelor of Science from Denison University in Granville, OH 2001
Played Varsity Women’s basketball at Denison University
Received Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2005
Began practicing for Vinton Veterinary Hospital in June 2005

Family includes:
Married to husband Spencer Wiegard since 2004. Spencer is a partner at law firm Gentry, Locke, Rakes & Moore.
Two Girls: Elliott who is 6 and Brynne who is 4

Dr. Lara B. Hertweck, DVM

Dr. Lara B. Herweck is a native of Nebraska who has lived on the east coast since 1993. She received a B.S. in Biology from Davidson College in North Carolina and graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Hertweck comes to Roanoke from Greensboro, NC where she has practiced for the past several years. Her professional interests include internal and geriatric medicine, canine and feline behavior and soft tissue surgery. She believes education and communication are the keys to providing excellent veterinary care and maintaining healthy, happy pets.

Dr. Hertweck lives outside of Roanoke with her husband, three dogs and two cats. In her free time she enjoys running, baking, gardening and a variety of team sports. She looks forward to becoming involved in the vibrant community that surrounds Vinton Veterinary Hospital.


Dr. Ellie Snead

Grew up in Salem, VA and has lived in the Roanoke Valley for much of her life.  She attended Hollins University and graduated with B.A. degrees in Mathematics and Biology in 2000.  After doing research for several years she decided to pursue her DVM at the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine graduating in 2006.  Dr. Snead then practiced equine medicine for 6 years before deciding to make a change to small animal medicine.  She joined the Vinton Veterinary team in November 2013.  Her professional interests include preventative care and internal medicine.  Outside of work Dr. Snead enjoys spending time with her family, hiking with her three dogs, and riding her horse.

Dr. Derek O'Dell

Dr. Derek O’Dell grew up in Southwest Roanoke County. He received his B.S. in Biological Sciences from Virginia Tech and graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine with his DVM in 2013. Dr. O’Dell practiced in Lynchburg after graduating from veterinary school and joined the Vinton Veterinary Hospital team in July 2014. Dr. O’Dell’s professional interests include oncology, internal medicine, dermatology, and preventative medicine. Dr. O’Dell lives in Roanoke with his wife Laura, Australian cattle dog/Basenji mix Sadie, and calico cat Lily. He spends his free time with family, enjoying the outdoors, and being an avid Virginia Tech sports fan.


Dr. Shelby Curbow

Dr. Costello was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Upon completing her B.S. degree in Zoology from Oklahoma State University in 2011, she received her DVM degree from VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. Prior to joining Vinton Veterinary Hospital, she practiced for one year at a small animal hospital in Ashburn, VA. Her professional interests include dentistry and preventative care. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and spending time outdoors with her fiancé, Kyle, and their two dogs: Kitt and Hank.


Dr. Raja Ramanathan

Dr. Raja Ramanathan was raised in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. He completed undergraduate studies in Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA and worked at a research and development site for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals for several years. He returned to school and fulfilled his childhood dream by earning his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Virginia Tech in 2012. While attending veterinary school he pursued interests in tissue regeneration and won a biotechnology research scholarship.

After graduating veterinary school, he spent three years practicing small animal medicine and surgery in the west around Albuquerque, New Mexico and volunteering to work with Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. He spent the next few years in the thrilling world of emergency medicine and general practice in the Greensboro, NC area before joining Vinton Veterinary Hospital. His interests include surgery, internal medicine, and the human-animal bond.

He is married to Danielle, a physician, and their family includes 2 children, 4 dogs and 3 cats most of whom have made both cross country moves. They are excited to begin working in Roanoke. He can be found struggling to climb Dragons Tooth or taking blurry pet and child photos in his time away from work.
